CONTRAPUNTO
15 NOVEMBER 2024 – 17 JANUARY 2025
Alejandra Laviada (b. 1980, Mexico City) studied Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design and earned a master’s degree in Photography and Video at the School of Visual Arts in New York. She currently lives and works in Paris.
Laviada’s work explores the relationship between photography and sculpture. The images arise from the intersections that exist between them, questioning to what extent photography can redefine the meaning and materiality of sculpture. Laviada primarily uses ordinary or discarded objects as raw materials, which she deconstructs and transforms into sculptures. Her practice moves from the concrete to the abstract and incorporates photography, sculpture, video, and painting.
Alejandra Laviada's work has been exhibited both individually and collectively in Mexico, the United States, and Europe. She has received recognition, such as the Discoveries Award at Photo España and first place at the Photography Biennial in Mexico. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA; the Jumex Collection, Mexico City; the Centro de la Imagen, Mexico City; and the Bank of America Collection, among others.
